The proportion of young adults who consider their health to be good or very good has declined by 10 percentage points over the past three years, according to a report from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). In 2020, 91 percent of young adults rated their health positively, but by last year, this figure had dropped to 82 percent. “Since 2021, there have been more young people with psychological complaints,” CBS stated.
In 2022 and 2023, only 23 percent of individuals aged 18 to 25 rated their health as very good, a notable decrease from pre-pandemic levels when this figure hovered around 30 percent. The decline in health satisfaction was observed among both men and women, though men more frequently reported being in good health, while women more commonly described their health as merely “fine.”
Teenagers aged 12 to 18 are more positive about their physical health compared to young adults. Last year, 39 percent of teenagers rated their health as very good, and 53 percent described it as good. “This has remained virtually the same since 2018,” CBS reported.
The mental health statistics present a concerning trend. Both teenagers and young adults have experienced an increase in psychological complaints. The incidence of these issues surged during the coronavirus pandemic, particularly in 2021, and has not returned to pre-pandemic levels since.
