Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought assistance from Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday, urging the deployment of Filipino mental health workers to Ukraine to support the well-being of their soldiers amidst the ongoing crisis in their country.
During their meeting at the Malacañan Palace, President Zelenskyy emphasized the need for additional mental health workers to aid soldiers and defenders at the forefront of the crisis in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the discussion on humanitarian aid, particularly in the areas of medicine and mental health support for the military personnel, highlighting the significant number of individuals requiring assistance upon their return, including support for their families.
In response, President Marcos assured President Zelenskyy of the Philippines’ readiness to provide assistance by dispatching Filipino mental health workers to Ukraine. He underscored the Philippines’ reputation in healthcare and commitment to global peacekeeping efforts, affirming the country’s willingness to extend support to civilians affected by conflict.
President Marcos reiterated the Philippines’ dedication to aiding those impacted by war, emphasizing that providing assistance aligns with the nation’s values and international commitments.
President Zelenskyy’s visit to Manila follows his participation in the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. The diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Ukraine, established in 1992, have endured for over three decades.
In terms of trade, Ukraine ranks as the Philippines’ 90th trading partner, with total trade valued at USD 16.9 million in 2022. Despite the ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukraine remains a destination for a small Filipino community, primarily composed of individuals married to Ukrainian nationals. However, recent circumstances have led to a decline in the number of Filipinos residing in Ukraine, with many opting to relocate amidst the conflict.
The exchange underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing humanitarian crises and promoting peace and stability in regions affected by conflict.
