Pawnee Mental Health Services (PMHS), Riley County EMS, Riley County Police Department, and Ascension Via Christi have joined forces to establish the Riley County Mental Health Task Force. This coalition aims to address the needs of individuals grappling with mental illness and substance use disorders in Riley County and its environs. The task force convenes monthly to strategize long-term objectives and evaluate progress.
Becky Woodard, Chief Clinical Officer at PMHS, highlighted the formation of a Crisis Innovation Committee within the task force. This committee is tasked with identifying gaps in the local crisis response system and collaboratively devising strategies to bridge these gaps. Woodard emphasized the strength of the committee’s relationships and shared accountability among its members.
Riley County EMS plays a crucial role as first responders, often encountering individuals in crisis situations. Josh Gering, Assistant Director of Riley County EMS, emphasized the task force’s role in facilitating referrals and connecting individuals with appropriate resources, thereby promoting holistic well-being.
Mark French, Captain of Riley County Police Department, underscored the importance of collective action in addressing mental health challenges. By leveraging the expertise and resources of multiple organizations, the task force can effectively match individuals with the support they need.
Crystal Pratt, representing Ascension Via Christi, emphasized the importance of proactive measures in addressing mental health issues. Through collaboration, the task force aims to identify and address gaps in education and support services within the community.
Brynne Haverkamp, Crisis Director at PMHS, noted a significant increase in mental health-related cases in recent years, attributing this trend to various factors including the impact of COVID-19. Despite the challenges, Haverkamp expressed optimism about the task force’s ability to raise awareness and provide support to those in need.
In a testament to the task force’s commitment to innovation and collaboration, a subgroup has been selected to participate in a crisis mapping and support program in Baltimore, facilitated by SAMHSA.
