In preparation for the upcoming Paris Games, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) is intensifying its focus on mental health services within elite sports, as affirmed by Jess Bartley, the senior director of psychological services at the USOPC.
Previously regarded as a taboo subject in the competitive realm of elite athletics, the discourse surrounding mental health gained significant prominence following the actions of American gymnast Simone Biles during the Tokyo Games three years ago. Biles’ decision to prioritize her mental well-being reshaped the conversation on athlete welfare within the sporting community.
Bartley emphasized the importance of destigmatizing mental health concerns among athletes, stating, “There doesn’t have to be anything wrong with you to focus on your mental health.” She highlighted the USOPC’s commitment to enhancing the level and quality of mental health services available to all athletes, underscoring that ongoing improvements are underway.
Drawing from lessons learned at previous Games, particularly from Biles’ experience, the USOPC has adopted a proactive approach to addressing athletes’ mental health needs, with a strong emphasis on crisis prevention and ongoing maintenance. Bartley noted that ahead of the Beijing Games, the organization has been focusing on implementing measures to support athletes’ sleep hygiene, recognizing its crucial role in mental well-being.
Speaking at the Team USA Media Summit in New York, Bartley outlined plans to prioritize discussions on sleep hygiene and strategies to mitigate jet lag for athletes participating in the Paris Games. She emphasized the importance of placing sleep hygiene as a top priority in athletes’ preparation routines.
Looking ahead, Bartley expressed the USOPC’s commitment to advancing mental health support initiatives not only for the Paris Games but also for future events, including the Los Angeles Games in 2028. The organization aims to continue evolving its approach to mental health care, ensuring comprehensive support for athletes throughout their sporting journeys.
