Community Mental Health (CMH) is on a mission to cultivate environments where every individual feels seen, heard, and valued, emphasizing the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as integral components of their initiatives.
At CMH’s 2023 Annual Report event, Dr. Tanya Bailey, a distinguished leader in DEI efforts, delivered a keynote address underscoring the theme “Belonging Matters.” According to Bailey, fostering a sense of belonging entails deliberate actions to ensure that individuals feel acknowledged, appreciated, and embraced in every setting they encounter.
Over the past year, CMH has made substantial investments in staff training and development programs aimed at nurturing an inclusive culture. Gabrielle Sarpy, CMH’s DEI Officer, highlighted initiatives such as Health Equity training, designed to address disparities in healthcare outcomes and better support individuals from diverse backgrounds.
In addition to staff training, CMH has expanded its services and partnerships to better serve the community. Initiatives include increased support for veterans and their families, expanded medical services, and collaborative partnerships to enhance community support networks.
Sara Lurie, CEO of Community Mental Health, emphasized the fundamental importance of belonging to mental health and well-being, stressing its positive impact on individuals’ lives from infancy through adulthood.
Bailey echoed this sentiment, urging individuals to recognize and appreciate the inherent value in everyone around them. She emphasized the importance of fostering an inclusive environment where the unique strengths of each individual are acknowledged and celebrated.
Notably, CMH has seen a significant increase in the number of young people seeking assistance over the past five years, highlighting the organization’s commitment to expanding access to mental health support services.
Looking ahead, CMH remains dedicated to promoting awareness of DEI principles among its employees and leadership, reaffirming its commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all members of the community.
