Akinrodoye Samuel, popularly known as Coach Dreh, has undertaken a remarkable feat to raise awareness about mental health in Nigeria. The professional swimming coach, CEO of Ocean 28 Swimming Academy, swam across the 11.8-kilometer stretch of water under the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, demonstrating his commitment to promoting mental well-being.
Embarking on this challenging endeavor from Oworonshoki on the mainland to Adeniji Adenle on the island, Coach Dreh showcased his prowess by completing the swim in an impressive 2 hours and 33 minutes. Throughout the journey, he was accompanied by friends and colleagues who provided unwavering support and encouragement.
Prior to the swim, Coach Dreh emphasized the transformative power of his decade-long swimming career, expressing his belief that his experience in the aquatic realm enables him to surmount any challenge. He also underscored the importance of seeking help for mental health issues, urging individuals grappling with depression and thoughts of suicide to reach out for support.
In his own words, Coach Dreh stated, “Mental health is a cause that I am passionate about. Life can be very tough and I think it is okay to ask for help. Your life can stay positively within a twinkle of an eye. Stay alive to witness it.”
The initiative received support from the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), further highlighting the significance of collective efforts in addressing mental health challenges within the community.
