In Bedford, where a significant portion of the young population actively engages in athletics, the spotlight is turning towards a crucial aspect often concealed within the life of student athletes – mental health. While sports bring joy and valuable life lessons, the mental well-being of these individuals can sometimes be overshadowed.
The prevailing stigma around mental health, often associated with negativity or perceptions of weakness, has created a barrier for athletes seeking resources and support. Recognizing this gap, Bedford High School took a significant step last fall by partnering with the national non-profit organization, Morgan’s Message, to break the stigma surrounding mental health, encourage open conversations, and raise awareness.
Morgan’s Message, a non-profit based in Gainesville, VA, was founded in memory of Morgan Rodger, a Duke University student and Division One lacrosse team player. Morgan battled mental health struggles following a season-ending knee injury and tragically died by suicide at the age of 22 in 2019. In response, Morgan’s parents, Dona and Kurt Rodgers, along with Morgan’s friends and teammates, established the organization to amplify resources, promote dialogue, and empower individuals to advocate for mental health – all aimed at normalizing its treatment alongside physical health.
This academic year, student-athletes at Bedford High School have actively participated in programs dedicated to the cause, spanning various sports such as soccer, field hockey, volleyball, basketball, and hockey. Student ambassadors set up awareness booths at games, distributing bracelets and stickers while delivering short speeches to both teams and spectators before the start of games.
Beyond game dedications, 83 students have joined the local mission, becoming part of Bedford’s Morgan’s Message club. Monthly meetings provide a platform for discussions on various mental health topics, enabling members to gain insights and education. Student ambassadors play a crucial role in community engagement, carrying the message of Morgan’s Message to the wider community.
The initiative in Bedford has also hosted guest speakers, such as Brandon Saho from “The Mental Game” podcast, emphasizing the importance of speaking up about personal struggles and finding tailored treatments. With the winter dedication game season concluded, Bedford’s Morgan’s Message is gearing up for the spring season, anticipating further community involvement and awareness activities.
Looking forward, Bedford’s Morgan’s Message envisions creating a safe and inclusive environment where mental health is taken seriously, fostering acceptance town-wide. While acknowledging that shifting the stigma will require time and education, the group at Bedford High School, supported by Morgan’s Message, is committed to altering perspectives and reshaping the dialogue surrounding mental health.
