The upcoming Mayfield A&P Show is set to tackle mental health challenges in the rural community, with Rural Support Trust ambassador Matt Chisholm taking center stage. As part of the nationwide Time Out Tour, Chisholm will be at the show on March 9, emphasizing the importance of socializing and addressing mental health concerns within the rural community.
Ben Morrow, president of the A&P show and a farmer himself, expressed the significance of Chisholm’s presence in encouraging farmers to take a break from their daily routines and engage with the rural community. Chisholm will be stationed in the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust tent and will also navigate the show grounds, interacting with attendees.
Morrow, having gained insights into the challenges faced by the rural community through his involvement in the A&P committee, emphasized the tough nature of farming and the importance of recognizing that many share similar struggles. He highlighted the positive impact of communal support and expressed enthusiasm for Chisholm’s contribution in shedding light on these challenges during the event.
Matt Chisholm, recognized as a farmer, television personality, and author, has been touring New Zealand as part of his uplifting tour. His appearance at the Mayfield A&P Show is arranged by the Rural Support Trust in collaboration with ANZ, Bayleys, BDO, Datamars Livestock, Fonterra, and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).
Chisholm’s journey, marked by a challenging childhood, perfectionism, and a battle with problem drinking, led to a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder. Despite his struggles, he openly shares his inspiring story to assist others facing similar demons. During the show, Chisholm will provide insights into the tools he uses to manage anxiety and maintain mental well-being, offering valuable information on supporting individuals grappling with mental health issues. The event aims to foster a supportive environment and raise awareness about the importance of mental health in rural communities.
