Livingston Parish Public Schools has launched a new mental health initiative catering to the growing needs of high school students. The teletherapy program, named Daybreak Health, aims to address the increasing mental health issues among students, partly exacerbated by the challenges of COVID-19 and the impact of a past flood in the parish.
Tristian Owens, a counselor at Denham Springs High School, highlighted the rise in students facing mental health issues and emphasized the susceptibility of young minds, particularly those affected by recent traumatic events. Owens expressed optimism about the teletherapy program’s ability to provide immediate assistance to students in need.
Superintendent Joe Murphy underscored the significance of Daybreak Health, offering students the opportunity to engage in up to 12 sessions of teletherapy with licensed clinical providers. Parental consent is a prerequisite for participating in the telehealth services, ensuring a collaborative approach between schools and families to address students’ mental health needs.
Daybreak Health has reported a success rate, with 90% of teens indicating satisfaction with being matched to therapists based on their individual needs and preferences, all at no cost to the students. The program includes weekly one-on-one teletherapy sessions, not only focusing on individual student needs but also incorporating a family plan to extend support to families requiring services.
To facilitate student engagement, Owens explained that students can reach out to their school counselor or utilize a QR code to complete an interest form for the program. The initiative is poised to make a positive impact on students’ well-being, and Owens expressed anticipation for the feedback from students who complete the full 12 weeks of teletherapy.
To provide more information and foster understanding, there will be one-on-one sessions for parents and students to learn more about Daybreak Health on January 25, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The session will take place at the LP Literacy & Technology Center, located at 9261 Florida Boulevard in Walker. This event aims to further engage parents and students in the mental health initiative and answer any questions they may have about the program.
