In the wake of two significant research reports by the New Lines Institute, a new report sheds light on the need for a comprehensive mental health rehabilitation program in Ukraine. The first two reports delved into the Russian Federation’s breaches of the Genocide Convention and outlined a Multilateral Action Model for reparations to rebuild Ukraine’s economy and society.
This latest report acknowledges the broader scope of damages inflicted on Ukraine, extending beyond physical infrastructure and economic losses. It emphasizes the trauma and mental health challenges that have emerged due to the conflict. Drawing insights from modern, holistic, strengths-based, and trauma-informed mental health practices, the report outlines a framework for a more holistic approach to rebuilding Ukraine.
Alysha Tagert, MSW, LICSW, an experienced mental health service provider and trauma expert, has played a crucial role in developing this framework. With her background in treating anxiety, depression, grief, loss, trauma, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Tagert has built clinical and social services programs for survivors of torture and trauma, contributing a wealth of knowledge to the report. She currently serves as the director of mental health and psychosocial support in U.S. Programs for World Relief.
The proposed framework for a mental health intervention program is grounded in the practical realities of Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts. By prioritizing the mental health and resilience of the Ukrainian people, it aims to establish a strong foundation for the country’s recovery.
