The Te Puke Kiwicoast Lions are hosting an event called “A Bit of a Yarn,” which aims to raise awareness of men’s mental health, with a particular focus on the rural sector. The event features speakers, including clinical physiologist Dougal Sutherland, who specializes in working with individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, and depression. Sutherland will discuss the challenges men face in seeking mental health support and how to break down the barriers preventing them from seeking help.
Paul Walker, the facilitator for the Bay of Plenty Rural Support Trust, will also share his insights into the role of the trust and his personal experiences related to rural mental health issues. The event is designed to inform and encourage discussions on men’s mental health, particularly in rural communities.
The organizers emphasize that the event is open to everyone, not just men, as these topics are essential for partners and family members who play a supporting role in mental health and may also be affected by related issues. A male-only fashion parade will add a lighthearted touch to the evening.
Funds raised at the event will be donated to the Bay of Plenty Rural Support Trust, a charitable organization that provides support to farmers, horticulturalists, and their families in the rural community.
