Brock University recognizes the increasing pressures faced by students as the Fall Term progresses and aims to ensure that its students have access to a range of mental health support services year-round. The Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre (SWAC) at Brock encourages students to reach out and access the available supports that best suit their needs.
The university’s commitment to student mental health is evident through the diverse range of resources and services offered by SWAC. These include 24/7 telephone and text support from counselors through Telus Health, providing students with quick and confidential access to mental health professionals.
For those seeking in-person support, SWAC offers mental health drop-in sessions at Harrison Hall and ST 402 from Monday to Friday. A unique feature is the availability of sessions with Leo, the support canine, on Mondays, providing a comforting presence for students.
Additional mental health resources include on-site Telus Health counselors for in-person sessions, international student drop-ins on Fridays, peer support in the HUB from Monday to Friday, and specific supports for individuals dealing with addictions and substance abuse through Community Addiction Services of Niagara.
One noteworthy program organized by SWAC is the “From Intention to Action” (FITA) counseling program, designed to assist students in enhancing their mental health, coping with academic stress, developing effective learning strategies, and maintaining a balanced life.
Mehroon Kassam, Brock’s Manager of Student Health/Counseling, emphasized the university’s commitment to supporting students from all walks of life. She highlighted that navigating life and academic pressures can be challenging, and SWAC is ready to provide assistance whenever needed.
Furthermore, students with disabilities or disability-related needs impacting their mental health can seek support from the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) team. Lisa Peso, Interim Manager of SAS, noted the intersection between the academic environment and mental health can create barriers, and their goal is to ensure equitable access for all students, offering resources, education, and accommodations as required.
Brock University’s comprehensive approach to mental health underscores its dedication to student well-being, aiming to make academic life more manageable and nurturing a supportive environment for all students.
