Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, made a thoughtful sartorial choice for World Mental Health Day when she joined Prince William for the Royal Foundation event, “Exploring our Emotional Worlds.” She donned a plain black top and trousers, adding a pop of color with a bright yellow L.K. Bennett jacket and star-shaped earrings.
The significance of her ensemble went beyond fashion. Kate, 41, selected yellow to show support for the annual #HelloYellow campaign, which aims to raise awareness about young people’s mental well-being and supports the YoungMinds charity. The 2023 theme for #HelloYellow, “stand out and show up for young people’s mental health,” was highlighted by The Source, a website offering information and support for young people in Suffolk, England.
Participating in workshops focused on emotions, relationships, and community action, Kate emphasized the importance of open discussions about issues affecting today’s youth and the power of continued support in “building a brighter, more resilient future.” She noted the progress made in promoting discussions about mental health and applauded the young generation for their courage in having these conversations.
Kate also wore star-shaped earrings called “Issy Star,” a gift from Sarah Renton, a Maidenhead Rugby Club coach, whose daughter, Isobelle Phipps, passed away by suicide earlier in the year. The earrings, designed by Phipps’ cousin Sophie McGown, support the mental health charity Brave Minds. They were initially given to the princess in June during her training at the Maidenhead Rugby Club as part of her Shaping Us initiative.
Kate’s meaningful outfit choice paralleled Meghan Markle’s thoughtful attire during a surprise visit to Brooklyn’s Marcy Lab School. Meghan, accompanied by Prince Harry, donned a special letterman jacket gifted to her by inner-city students during one of her last solo engagements as a working royal in March 2020. The visit aimed to support families striving to create a safer online environment for children and teens, coinciding with William and Kate’s forum, “Exploring our Emotional Worlds.”
