In observance of World Mental Health Day, Professor Muhammad Waqar Azeem, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Sidra Medicine, has underscored the paramount importance of prioritizing mental health for both individuals and organizations. This year’s theme, ‘Mental Health is a Universal Human Right,’ places a spotlight on equality and inclusion in mental health care.
World Mental Health Day, an annual event held on October 10, serves as a global call to action, urging open discussions about mental health and the eradication of stigma and discrimination surrounding it. Professor Azeem asserted, “There is no health without mental health,” emphasizing that safeguarding mental well-being is equally crucial as physical health.
In an exclusive interview with The Peninsula, Professor Azeem delved into the significance of nurturing mental well-being in the workplace and its profound impact on the lives of employees.
Professor Azeem accentuated the advantages of fostering a mentally healthy work environment, noting that organizations fostering such conditions tend to witness increased engagement, contentment, and well-being among their workforce.
“An organization with a mentally healthy workplace is a win-win for all… Studies have demonstrated that nurturing a positive atmosphere fosters innovation, creativity, and growth. Elevated job satisfaction and a supportive work environment enhance morale and productivity,” he stated.
To cultivate a more inclusive and respectful workplace culture, Professor Azeem recommended implementing a range of initiatives:
These initiatives encompass wellness programs, mental health awareness campaigns, open communication forums, inclusive and supportive policies, regular employee check-ins, and acknowledging and rewarding exemplary practices. Policies grounded in transparent communication and empathy, while accommodating employee needs, can substantially enhance their well-being.
Addressing burnout and work-related stress is vital for preserving employees’ emotional and physical health.
Offering stress management workshops equips employees with the tools to handle workplace pressures effectively. Routine mental health check-ins between managers and employees encourage candid communication. Peer support networks connecting employees facing similar challenges can yield considerable benefits. Moreover, it is crucial for these policies to be sensitive to gender and cultural diversity to address the unique needs of the workforce.
Leadership assumes a pivotal role in creating a mentally healthy workplace. Leading by example, exhibiting openness, empathy, and accessibility to employees sets the tone for the entire organization.
In addition to the workplace, Professor Azeem emphasized the importance of self-care and achieving work-life balance for individuals.
“Establishing good sleep habits, maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, and distinguishing between work and personal/family time are essential components of preserving emotional and physical health. Mindful usage of screens and media, pursuing hobbies, and engaging in positive social interactions are also imperative for promoting positive mental health,” he advised.
World Mental Health Day serves as a poignant reminder that mental health is a universal concern, underlining the imperative for individuals and organizations to collaborate in crafting environments that nurture well-being, inclusivity, and support for all.
