The Birmingham City Council has approved funding of approximately $400,000 to provide free mental health services to citizens in partnership with the No More Martyrs Black Women’s Health Initiative. This initiative aims to offer over 100 hours of mental health counseling to those in need.
Funded through the American Rescue Plan, Councilors Crystal Smitherman and LaTonya Tate have taken the lead on this effort, inspired by a constituent’s request to bring mental health counseling to the district.
The counseling services will be offered free of charge to address the mental health needs of the community, with plans to collaborate with a doctor to determine the availability of services.
This initiative represents an important step in providing accessible mental health support to residents of Birmingham.
