The UW-Eau Claire volleyball team is taking a proactive approach to raise awareness about mental health. During their recent home matchup against UW-Platteville, the Blugolds designated the game as their mental health awareness event.
The primary objective of this initiative is to draw attention to the mental health challenges faced by students and student-athletes alike. In addition to fostering awareness, the team conducted a fundraiser to generate funds for the distribution of educational materials on mental health across the campus.
UWEC Associate Professor of Psychology, Stacey Jackson, emphasized the importance of open discussions surrounding mental health. By openly displaying resources and facilitating conversations, students can find the support and assistance they need while feeling comfortable seeking help.
To encourage participation and engagement, the first 400 students attending the game received a free journal courtesy of Mayo Clinic Health System, and Blugold Dining contributed by providing a free comfort food basket. These efforts not only raise awareness but also promote the importance of mental health discussions and support within the university community.
