Cardiologist Dr. Geoffrey Toogood has been recognized as a winner of the 2023 Australian Mental Health Prize, a prestigious accolade celebrating individuals who have made significant contributions to mental health advocacy in Australia. The prize aims to acknowledge the outstanding work carried out by Australians in the field of mental health.
During a ceremony held at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Dr. Toogood, hailing from Frankston South, was presented with the Lived Experience award by Emma McBride, the Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.
Dr. Toogood’s journey has been marked by personal experiences with mental illness, which inspired his unwavering mission: to destigmatize mental health conversations within the medical community and shed light on the challenges faced by healthcare professionals.
In response to his own experiences, Dr. Toogood founded the “Crazy Socks 4 Docs” movement, which has gained global recognition and participation. The movement’s flagship event, Crazysocks4docs Day, observed on the first Friday of June each year, has made a significant impact in raising awareness about mental health issues among healthcare professionals.
