Recognizing the increasing importance of mental health among students, Thomas College has been awarded three grants totaling over $70,000 to enhance student behavioral health.
In 2022, the college reported a 20% increase in scheduled counseling appointments compared to the previous year. Several factors contribute to this rise, including students being more independent in seeking help and the adjustment to a new environment.
The grants will support initiatives to promote mental health on campus. One significant grant of $30,000 from the Maine Health Access Foundation will enable Thomas College to partner with the JED Foundation to become a JED campus. The JED Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on promoting emotional well-being and mental health among college students.
Additionally, the college has incorporated student input through experiments like the President’s Innovation Challenge. In 2021, three students examined mental health issues as part of the challenge, and their findings have contributed to shaping the college’s mental health programs.
Overall, these grants are expected to enhance the support available to current and future students, emphasizing the importance of mental health and well-being on campus and aiming to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help.
