As syllabus week wraps up and the semester begins to gain momentum, the school year ahead might appear daunting. Juggling coursework and other responsibilities while safeguarding your mental health can seem like an impossible task. Fortunately, there are numerous opportunities on campus to de-stress and seek support if you find yourself struggling with your mental well-being.
1. Get Active at the Recreation, Athletics, and Wellness Centre (RAWC)
Regular exercise is known to benefit various aspects of health, including mental well-being. Fortunately, the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) boasts a state-of-the-art athletic center, making it convenient to incorporate workouts into your schedule. Explore the RAWC calendar to slot in a group fitness class between study sessions. These classes cater to different fitness levels, durations, and intensities, ensuring there’s something for every student. RAWC also offers drop-in sessions for sports like squash, badminton, beach volleyball, swimming, and more. Some hours are reserved for women-only access to the Strength & Conditioning Centre, with additional women-only classes like “Women on Weights.”
For those who prefer working out independently, the RAWC provides a range of equipment available during operating hours: weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
2. Immerse Yourself in Nature at Erindale Park
As autumn approaches, the changing leaves on campus trees will offer a picturesque backdrop to your fall semester. To fully embrace nature’s beauty, take a short journey off-campus to Erindale Park, Mississauga’s largest park. The David J. Culham Trail stretches over 13 kilometers, taking less than three hours to complete. Alternatively, you can opt for the shorter 9-kilometer Sawmill Creek Trail, which offers a quieter and more secluded experience.
If hiking isn’t your preference, pack a lunch and visit one of Erindale Park’s five picnic areas. For the ultimate fall foliage experience, bring a warm drink and a good book!
3. Join a Campus Club and Connect with Like-minded Peers
UTM offers a wide array of clubs and student societies that cater to diverse interests, ensuring that every student can find a group to join. Forge new friendships with individuals who share your passions while boosting your extracurricular involvement.
If you’re an ardent reader, consider attending UTM Book Discovery’s meetings to discuss their book of the month. Sports enthusiasts can register for tri-campus sports, with tryouts taking place throughout September. Alternatively, combine fun with community service by participating in the UTM Charity Fashion Show.
4. Attend UTM’s Numerous Free Events
Campus events offer a welcome respite from the academic grind. When you’re not cramming for tests or finishing late-night essays, seize the opportunity to attend free campus events between classes for socializing and enjoyment. On September 14, join the Blackwood Gallery for a sign-making workshop from 1-4 p.m. in front of the Communication, Culture, and Technology Building. This event precedes the Peel Committee Against Women Abuse’s Take Back The Night March on September 21.
If you’re an upper-year student striving to perfect your resume or gain valuable work experience, explore the Career Centre’s calendar for workshops on cover letters, resumes, interviewing, and networking skills.
University life can be demanding, and neglecting your mental health is all too common amidst academic pressures. Regardless of the day, you can find campus activities to help alleviate stress, whether it’s through a fitness class or moments of tranquility in nature.
