St. Georges High School has become the first public high school in Delaware to introduce a ‘Sean’s Room,’ a dedicated space to support the mental health and well-being of students.
The new room is designed as a safe, welcoming environment where students can receive peer support, decompress, study, or simply gather. The facility includes six distinct areas, such as a kitchen with a microwave, study spaces, a lounge, and areas for yoga and meditation. There is also a play area equipped with a foosball table and air hockey, offering students a variety of ways to relax and engage.
St. Georges High School Principal, Justin Comegys, emphasized the versatility of the space. “It’s a place where students can either work, receive one-on-one support from their peers, or just find a space to relax, depending on their needs that day,” Comegys explained.
While this is the first Sean’s Room in a public high school in Delaware, similar spaces have already been established at Salesianum and St. Mark’s high schools.
“The main thing it means for me is that our students are going to get the support they need,” Comegys said. “This space is driven by the efforts of our students, and we’re excited to provide them with a safe space on campus where they can manage anxiety, decompress, or just have somewhere to go when they feel overwhelmed.”
The initiative was made possible through a partnership between St. Georges High School, the SL24 UnLocke the Light Foundation, and the New Castle County VoTech District.
The Sean’s Room and the SL24 UnLocke the Light Foundation are named in honor of Sean Locke, a former University of Delaware basketball player who tragically lost his life to depression, taking his own life just before his 24th birthday in 2018. Sean’s House in Newark, a residence once home to Locke, now serves as a resource for teens and young adults facing mental health challenges.
