AKRON, IN — The Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation (TVSC) has received vital funding through Health First Indiana, facilitated by the Kosciusko County Health Department, to bolster mental health resources and enhance emergency medical services for its students. This initiative is part of a growing commitment to improving the well-being of young people within the district and ensuring access to necessary health services.
In the spring of 2024, TVSC was awarded $32,850 to fund the salary and benefits of an additional mental health therapist for the district. By the summer of 2024, this funding allowed the school to hire a new therapist, who began serving students at Mentone Elementary and Tippecanoe Valley Middle School in early August.
Improving Mental Health Access for Students
The decision to bring in an additional mental health professional came after recognizing the increasing need for mental health support within the community. Kyle Wieland, principal of Tippecanoe Valley Middle School, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “This funding has allowed us to provide critical mental health support to students who otherwise might not have access. The addition of a mental health therapist has had a profound impact, helping students navigate challenges and develop essential coping skills.”
The positive impact of the mental health therapist is reflected in feedback from parents and guardians. Many have expressed their appreciation for the school-based counseling services, especially for students who had previously struggled to find consistent therapy due to factors like cost, scheduling conflicts, or mismatched therapist personalities. One of the district’s mental health therapists shared a message noting the overwhelming gratitude from families, with several reporting significant improvements in their children’s well-being and coping abilities since they began receiving support at school.
Expanding Emergency Medical Resources
Along with the focus on mental health, TVSC has also invested in life-saving equipment as part of its continued efforts to improve student safety. The district recently received additional funding from Health First Indiana to purchase six new AED (Automated External Defibrillator) devices. These new devices will be distributed across school buildings to ensure quick access to emergency medical support in case of heart-related incidents.
Sustaining Mental Health Support into the Future
Looking ahead, Tippecanoe Valley Schools have already been approved for $65,700 in funding for 2025, which will help continue to support the salaries and benefits of their mental health therapists. This funding remains crucial in maintaining and expanding the mental health services available to students, ensuring that they have the emotional, social, and academic support needed to thrive in school and beyond.
A Holistic Approach to Student Wellness
The combination of mental health resources and emergency medical preparedness reflects a holistic approach to student wellness at Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation. The district’s efforts, backed by Health First Indiana funding, underscore the importance of providing students with the tools they need to succeed not only academically but also emotionally and physically.
As the district moves forward, these initiatives will continue to play an essential role in supporting students’ mental health and overall well-being, helping them to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and strength.
