For many teens, going through a tough time can feel isolating. But for Jocelyn Richards and Skye, her therapy dog, the power of support and connection helps others navigate their mental health struggles.
Jocelyn, an advocate for The Gray Matters Collective, has been able to offer comfort to fellow teens, sharing how much pets can ease the pain. “People always say, ‘It is so nice to see a dog. I miss my dog a lot,’” Jocelyn shared. “And when they’re petting Skye, they say, ‘This is exactly what I needed today.’”
Jocelyn’s journey with The Gray Matters Collective began after it played an important role in her own mental health recovery. However, a tragic event at her high school, the loss of a student to suicide, became a turning point. “After we lost a student to suicide, I was like, we can’t take any more of this,” said Richards. This led her to become a mental health advocate, determined to make a difference.
Skye, a dog who participates in pet therapy with the team, brings comfort to those in need. Alongside Jocelyn and other teen advocates from QCCAN, they attend events providing therapy and emotional support. The work of the team has made a profound impact on those they reach. “I was able to help him through some tough times,” said Cael Hinde, another advocate. “Honestly, it just made my month, my year, to see somebody come back from that. He’s doing a lot better now.”
The Gray Matters Collective’s message is clear and vital. “You matter. You’re worthy of life. And if no one cares about you, know I do. Know that everybody here does, and that we’ll always be here for you, no matter what,” said Hinde.
Additionally, Richards noted how a simple gesture, like the message on Skye’s vest, can have a deep effect. “On Skylar’s vest, she has patches saying, ‘Never give up.’ Having that on her vest sends a message: do not give up. You are worthy of being here.”
Through pet therapy, advocacy, and emotional support, The Gray Matters Collective continues to reach teens in need, reminding them of their worth and the importance of seeking help. For anyone looking for mental health resources, Gray Matters offers free options, available on their social media channels.
