In an effort to combat the stigma surrounding mental health, suicide, and addiction, Prevent Suicide Taylor County has partnered with Man Therapy to provide crucial resources to local men and their loved ones. This initiative is part of a larger campaign to raise awareness during Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month and honor the 25th annual International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day.
Addressing the Rise in Suicide Rates
“Sadly, over the past few years we’ve seen an increase in suicides, especially among our male residents,” said Melissa Moore, public health foundationalist with the Taylor County Health Department. With suicide being preventable, Moore emphasized the need for more than just awareness. “We must go beyond awareness building to move the needle on this issue,” she added. The launch of Man Therapy aims to reach those at risk and guide them towards resources that promote better mental health.
Man Therapy’s Unique Approach
Man Therapy offers a unique, web-based platform designed specifically to engage men in addressing their mental health concerns. Using humor, it tackles serious topics such as depression, divorce, trauma, and suicidal thoughts. The initiative invites participants to take an 18-point, scientifically validated inspection in under five minutes. The anonymous questionnaire helps men assess their strengths and challenges while providing tailored mental health resources specific to Taylor County.
This engaging approach aims to break down the barriers often preventing men from seeking help. Participants are given a personalized resource page that links them directly to local services, ensuring that men in the community can access life-saving resources when they need them most.
A Critical Step Toward Community Health
With the increasing concern over male suicides, the collaboration between Prevent Suicide Taylor County and Man Therapy is a critical step in addressing mental health challenges head-on. By making mental health resources more accessible and reducing stigma through humor and relatability, the initiative strives to save lives and improve overall well-being for men in the community.
