AUGUSTA, Maine — On Saturday, Mainers converged at Capitol Park for the annual NAMI-Maine Walk, a community event dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues.
Participants traversed a one-mile loop, enjoying food and engaging in activities like tie-dying and bubble blowing, all while fostering an atmosphere conducive to open dialogue about mental health.
“They’re able to have a space where they can spend time with each other in a fun, positive environment,” said event organizer Jill Henderson. “They feel safe knowing that the folks around them care about mental health and access to care for all Mainers.”
Attendee Amelia Teta shared her thoughts, noting the common bond among participants: “You have no idea why people are here or who they’re here for. You just know we all have something in common that allows us to connect.”
Hosted annually by the Maine chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI-Walks Maine aims to raise funds for vital mental health resources.
