In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, the Beta Alpha Zeta Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Inc., a Black women’s sorority, took a bold stance by challenging conventional notions of mental health within the Black community.
Clinical social worker Sheril Cooley urged individuals to discard preconceived notions and misconceptions about mental health during a talk hosted on Sunday.
The sorority’s monthly luncheon meeting, held at the Eagles Hall on St. James Avenue, served as the platform for this crucial dialogue. Family therapists Dr. Winifred Martin from the Tribe Institute and Andrea St. Louis from the Tatted Professionals, alongside representatives from the Pioneer Valley Coalition for Suicide Prevention and Families Against Violence, contributed their insights to the discussion.
